Winmalee Family Smiles was created for one simple reason: we wanted to bring the same exceptional standard of care we’re known for at Emu Plains to a community that deserves high-quality dentistry closer to home. We also wanted the clinic to feel different. Calm, warm, welcoming, and designed around the patient experience, not just the clinical appointment.
This is an introduction to who we are, what we stand for, and what you can expect when you visit.
Our “why”: why we built Winmalee Family Smiles
A dental clinic can be technically excellent and still feel intimidating. We’ve always believed you should be able to access modern, evidence-based dentistry without feeling rushed, judged, or pressured.
Winmalee Family Smiles is built around a few core goals:
- Creating a warm, calm environment where families feel comfortable from the moment they walk in
- Being locally owned and community focused, with clinicians trained here in Australia
- Taking the time to educate patients, answer questions properly, and support informed decisions
- Delivering dentistry that is medically and scientifically grounded, with high standards and attention to detail
Our goal is simple: to become the most trusted dental home for families in Winmalee and the wider Blue Mountains.
Meet the team
Dr Sam Lin (Lead Clinician)
Dr Sam is the lead clinician at Winmalee Family Smiles. He enjoys the creative side of dentistry, particularly cosmetic smile makeovers and implant dentistry, but what truly defines his work is how meticulous he is with the details. He’s big on thorough planning and precise execution so results look natural, feel comfortable, and last.
From routine family check-ups through to complex full-arch implant rehabilitation such as All-on-X, Sam has extensive experience and training across a wide range of care. His focus, no matter the treatment, is helping patients understand their situation clearly and feel confident in the decisions they make. That means honest conversations, practical options, and no rushed recommendations.
Sam has completed advanced training with the Cambridge Academy of Dental Implantology and is currently undertaking further training with the Kois Institute in Seattle. Outside the clinic, he loves snowboarding and spending time on the slopes.
Dr Ashley Ong (Principal Dentist)
Dr Ashley Ong is known for her warm, friendly nature and the way she makes dental visits feel easier, especially for families. She takes a calm, patient approach and is particularly thoughtful with anxious patients. If you’ve had a bad experience in the past or you tend to feel nervous in the chair, Ashley works at your pace. She explains things clearly, checks in regularly, and focuses on helping you feel in control throughout the appointment.
Ashley is also fantastic with kids. She has a natural ability to build trust quickly, keep things light, and turn a first dental visit into a positive experience. Her style is gentle and encouraging, with a big emphasis on prevention and setting children up with habits that support long-term oral health. Parents often appreciate how clearly she communicates, and how she makes appointments feel structured and reassuring rather than rushed.
Clinically, Ashley has a strong interest in orthodontics, particularly early intervention orthodontic treatment, and she is completing further training with the City of London College. Outside the clinic, you’ll usually find Ashley in a Pilates class or spending time with her nieces and new nephew.
Our philosophy: what we believe good dentistry should feel like
At Winmalee Family Smiles, we don’t believe dentistry should feel confusing, rushed, or salesy. We believe it should feel clear and steady.
That means:
- We listen first, and we don’t assume we know what matters to you
- We explain what we’re seeing in plain language and show you where possible (photos and scans help)
- We give you options, including the pros and cons, so you can choose what fits your goals and budget
- We prioritise long-term stability, not quick fixes that lead to repeat problems
We also believe prevention is underrated. Catching small issues early is usually simpler, gentler, and more cost-effective than leaving things until they become emergencies.
Services we provide
We offer comprehensive care for families, from routine prevention to more advanced treatments. Common services at Winmalee Family Smiles include:
- Family check-ups and cleans
- Children’s dentistry and preventative care
- Gum health assessments and treatment
- Fillings and restorative care
- Crowns and ceramic restorations
- Emergency dental care and pain relief planning
- Wisdom teeth assessments and extractions (where appropriate)
- Clear aligners and orthodontic guidance (including early intervention orthodontics)
- Dental implants, including complex implant treatment planning and full-arch implant rehabilitation (case dependent)
- Cosmetic dentistry and smile makeover planning
If a case is highly specialised and would benefit from specialist care, we will tell you clearly and coordinate the process. The goal is always the best outcome, not keeping everything “in- house”.
The patient experience: what to expect on your first visit
We want patients to leave with clarity. Not a blur of jargon. Not uncertainty. A clear picture of what’s healthy, what needs attention, and what the best next step is.
A typical first visit involves:
- A conversation about your goals, concerns, and dental history
- A thorough examination of your teeth, bite, and gums
- Gum health measurement (because gum disease is often silent early)
- Photos or scans where appropriate to help explain findings clearly
- X-rays when clinically necessary
- A clean and polish where suitable, or a staged plan if deeper gum care is needed
- A clear written summary and treatment plan if anything needs addressing
If you’re nervous or you’ve had a bad experience in the past, tell our team when booking. We can slow the appointment down, explain less or more depending on your preference, and keep things calm.
If you know us from Emu Plains Family Dental
To our Emu Plains patients, thank you for trusting us. Many of you have asked if the same care philosophy and standards apply at Winmalee. The answer is yes. You’ll see the same focus on prevention, detail, communication, and evidence-based care, in a clinic designed specifically to serve Winmalee and the Blue Mountains community.
If you have recent records or imaging from elsewhere and want to avoid repeating what isn’t necessary, bring them along. We’re always happy to work with existing information where it’s clinically appropriate.
Do you see children?
